Just Right Reader Receives Certification for Its Efficacy in Enhancing Student Learning Outcomes

The International Certification of Evidence of Impact in Education (ICEIE) recently granted Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ a Silver Efficacy certificate for enhancing learning outcomes. As part of the certification process, ICEIE validated supporting research conducted by LXD Research, a third-party firm, which found students who use Just Right Reader’s decodable books show greater literacy gains than students who do not use Just Right Reader.

“This certification and supporting research underscores what we already know—our Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ are invaluable in improving student literacy and helping to develop strong, confident readers,” said Sara Rich, CEO of Just Right Reader. “This is especially true when students engage in high-dosage reading at home which is why we have specifically tailored our literacy resources to support a strong school-to-home connection.”

ICEIE’s Silver certificate for efficacy demonstrates that the impact of Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ has been tested with correlational studies, including quasi-experimental studies or A/B testing. This same research study validated by ICEIE also earned Just Right Reader the LXD Research ESSA Evidence Badge for Tier 3 Promising Evidence for Grade 2.

In the research study, 93 students from Houston Independent School District in Texas used Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ during a six-week time period in Spring 2024. LXD Research analyzed the performance of these students on the MAP Growth and DIBELS to examine their growth and proficiency status from mid-year to end-of-year, compared to 111 students who did not use the literacy packs.

The results showed meaningful progress for the students using Just Right Reader as their MAP Growth Percentile improved 33 points (34 to 67), compared to 23 points for the students who did not use Just Right Reader (31 to 54). Additionally, students who used Just Right Reader excelled in DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) accuracy with the median percentile rising from 46 percent to 62 percent, compared to 42 percent to 44 percent for students who did not use Just Right Reader.

Notably, the 45 percent of students who used Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ to read for three or more hours at home went from below the 14th percentile to above the 72nd percentile on MAP Growth.

“When product designers leverage learning sciences to design and evaluate their programs, educators can better target instruction, and students’ skills soar,” said Dr. Rachel Schechter, founder of LXD Research. “Through a correlational study design, a statistical evaluation shows that student growth is associated with student product use. Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ meet this criterion showing a meaningful and positive impact on student literacy.”

Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ come in multiple levels to meet students’ current reading experience. They offer structured phonics practice using texts that students relate to and enjoy anytime and anywhere, as well as several at-home support resources and practice materials that families can access online.
