Kenya to cut arts education fund for technical schools

Kenyan universities could face slashed governmental allocations beginning next financial year if some of the funds are diverted to technical institutions.

The move is part of the changes contained in a new curriculum that is expected to take effect in May this year. If implemented, this will make a radical shift to technical and science courses against arts and social sciences.

Education, science and technology cabinet secretary, Fred Matiang’i, says he will lobby for increased number of students taking technical courses as opposed to those studying arts at the universities.

Librarians: Information literacy is a must have skill

Nearly half of librarians in a recent survey said their libraries do not advocate for information literacy as much as they should.

The ProQuest survey of 217 librarians from higher education, K-12 schools and public libraries reveals that while 83 percent said information literacy has a large impact on college graduation rates, and though 97 percent of those surveyed said information literacy leads to success in the workforce, just 44 percent believe their libraries adequately support the skill.

Nepal native woman overcomes challenges on her way to getting an education at UVU

One of the first things Pasang Sherpa noticed when she arrived in the United States from her native Nepal was how easy everything is for Americans.

Raised almost literally in the shadow of Mt. Everest in the tiny country sandwiched between India and China, Pasang had left home as a 17-year-old to join her father, who had left the family when she was 8, relocating to a small town in Colorado. And Pasang would know about what’s easy and what’s difficult, because her life has been much of the latter.
