CoSN Podcast: Closing the Gap with Marcia Kish (S2, E5)

Closing the Gap - S2E5

Listen to the Article:

In this episode of the CoSN Podcast, Marcia Kish discusses how educators can begin closing  the gap created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today we’re joined by Marcia Kish, Chief Innovation Officer with DSD Professional Development, to discuss one of the pressing issues facing educators of all roles: closing knowledge gaps created or exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. School leaders and classroom teachers have a clear understanding of the challenges students have faced, the goals that have been set for their learning, and the urgency of achieving a great start to the new academic year. The question now: how can we ensure success?

Marcia tackles this issue from a variety of angles, including a discussion of the challenges teachers have observed and how to communicate these insights to technology directors and other administrators; the best ways to assess students’ current knowledge levels to allow for meaningful personalized instruction; how to increase student engagement (and avoid disengagement) to enable better learning; how technology leaders can support blended learning and other effective approaches; and more.

  • Marcia Kish’s interest in blended learning began when she was a fifth grade teacher at Worthington City Schools.  Noticing that all students learn at a different pace, Marcia decided to ditch the traditional teaching method and go with the small group learning environment.  She soon realized she was creating something special and wanted to share out the teaching method with other teachers across the country.  With a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Marcia was equipped and ready to take on the world of blended learning.  After 12 years of teaching in the classroom, Marcia went on to work as a professional development coordinator which then lead to her starting a Blended Learning high school in Central Ohio, Learning Without Limits.   Now, Marcia is presenting Keynote speeches on the success of blended learning, providing blended learning workshops, and coaching teachers through the process of implementing blended learning.  In her spare time, she is currently writing the “Blended Learning Cookbook”.
