EdgeMakers Institute Extends Deadline for Free Innovation Program Until July 25

Innovate Arizona is a leading-edge program designed to teach innovation and entrepreneurship to students in grades 6-12

SAN FRANCISCO, California ― July 13, 2018 — EdgeMakers Institute today announced it has extended the deadline to sign up for Innovate Arizona until July 25, 2018.  This fully funded program is available to 50 teachers and 1,600 students in Arizona public schools for the 2018-19 school year. Already, 16 teachers and 350 students from Phoenix and Tucson have signed up to participate.

The program features professional development for teachers and the EdgeMakers foundational Innovative Thinking course, designed to teach creativity, storytelling, design thinking, collaboration, and entrepreneurship to students in grades 6-12. The primary target for this opportunity is Title I schools, though teachers at any public school or charter school in Arizona are invited to sign up a single class or multiple classes.

Innovate Arizona was launched with a generous grant from the Haury Trust. A significant focus of this project is to partner with Arizona schools to build the capacity of teachers and students to innovate with purpose to advance economic development in the state. The overall goal is to demonstrate the value of innovation learning at scale and its impact on the social and economic development of a region.

“Innovate Arizona presents schools with a valuable opportunity to teach the ‘how-to’ of innovation and empower students to become the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs,” said John Kao, Founder and Chair of EdgeMakers Institute. “Students will develop core capacities such as creativity, design thinking, and collaboration in order to turn their ideas into true innovations that address some of the world’s most complex problems. These are the skills that are needed to fuel future economic growth in the state of Arizona.”

The EdgeMakers curriculum is now well established and widely recognized as an effective and groundbreaking method to teach creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. Moreover, EdgeMakers courses were recently approved as credit-bearing electives by the country’s two largest states — California and Texas. Innovative Thinking is the foundational 60-hour course and can be offered over one semester or an entire school year. It was piloted by 400 students in Tucson during the 2017-18 school year.

“Prior to EdgeMakers, my students were focused on dealing with pollution but were getting bored and stuck. After starting the EdgeMakers curriculum, they realized they could be more creative and could expand their thinking. Specifically, they began looking at climate change as a whole and were able to come up with viable solutions to address the issue,” said Scott Weiler, who taught EdgeMakers’ Innovative Thinking course last year at Amphitheater Middle School in Tucson, Arizona. “They also realized that being innovators was available to them and wasn’t limited to the rich or Silicon Valley types. They saw a connection with themselves to the innovators of history that we introduced to them.”

• Earn EdgeTeacher Certification (professional development to gain a deeper understanding of EdgeMakers’ Innovative Thinking Framework).

• Contribute to the social and economic development of Arizona.
• Become idea generators who execute on new initiatives.
• Live curiously, think critically, and integrate knowledge across disciplines and cultures.
• Develop solutions to 21st-century challenges.
• Become an EdgeMaker – someone who sees “wicked problems” — and apparently unsolvable challenges — as opportunities for creative change and works collaboratively with others to effect change.
• Participate in an Edgemakers Credential Passport System (ECPS), driven by blockchain technology, to earn credentials they can take with them following their Edgemaker course.
