Turning to the Experts for Online Teaching

In this episode, Courtney Ostaff discusses how to structure online teaching and ways to make it work. Find out her philosophy about structuring your online lesson and tools to bolster the online learning experience.

Courtney has been teaching online since 1999 and describes why online teaching is far more than preparing your typical lesson and turning on a camera. This interview also addresses students with exceptionalities in this new era of online learning as well as a brief touch on the achievement gap in rural America.

Dr. Wendy Oliver is a highly qualified Tennessee teacher and administrator who has pioneered digital learning across multiple states and school districts. She has authored digital teaching standards and developed software that allows teachers to self-assess their knowledge of digital instruction. No matter which hat she’s wearing, her goal is simple — to empower learners. Dr. Oliver is currently the Chief Learning Officer for EdisonLearning.

  • Courtney Ostaff is a co-host of the Modern Classical Education at Home podcast, where she shares curmudgeonly opinions about curricula, tips for getting homeschooling done, and in-depth reviews of books on education and professional online K-12 teacher and homeschooling parent. Since 1999, she’s taught in private and public community colleges, high schools, middle schools, daycares, and homes, both online and face to face.

    She has a master’s in public administration, a master’s in secondary education, and teaching certifications in mathematics, science, and social studies grades 5 to 12, as well as a special education certification in teaching the visually impaired, birth through adulthood.

    Currently, she is homeschooling her own children and teaching online at the secondary level, ages 8 to 18.

    Her interest lies in applying the latest research in cognitive science to best practices in online education and the intersection of application with classical education.
