Just Right Reader Donates 315,000 Books to North Carolina Schools

In support of North Carolina schools in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Just Right Reader recently donated 315,000 books to support students in grades K-2 throughout northwest and western North Carolina. The books, which are included in Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™, were distributed to public school systems throughout the region in partnership with the Northwest Region Education Service Alliance (NWRESA) and Western Region Education Service Alliance (WRESA).

“Within 48 hours after the hurricane, our Just Right Reader representative reached out to us asking how they can help. And, help they have,” said Terry Worrell, executive director of NWRESA, which is located in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. “This donation puts high-quality literature directly in our students’ hands and reinforces the importance of reading. We feel very blessed to receive these books and to have the opportunity to further support our students and families, especially in a time like this.”

“As our area continues to recovery, we are just so appreciative of Just Right Reader for their generous donation to our students, many of whom lost all of their school supplies and books—amongst other items—during the hurricane,” added Jan Webster, director of WRESA, which is located in Asheville, North Carolina.

Just Right Reader donated a total of 31,500 Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™, which equals 315,000 books, to NWRESA and WRESA. The organizations then distributed the packs directly to the districts in their service area.

Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ come in multiple levels to meet students’ current reading experience. They offer structured phonics practice using texts that students relate to and enjoy anytime and anywhere, as well as several at-home support resources and practice materials that families can access online.

Just Right Reader’s Science of Reading Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ include:

  • Science of Reading-based literacy resources in English and Spanish to help teach students particular letter-sound relationships
  • Writing resources to reinforce decoding and writing skills based on what students have read
  • QR codes on each book that parents and caregivers can scan to access fun phonics lessons in English and Spanish to support reading at home
  • Access to an online family hub with research-based activities that motivate students to read and keep reading

“Many families in North Carolina have been heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene. Some schools were closed for a month or longer and many families still do not have permanent housing. Alongside NWRESA and WRESA, we hope our literacy resources provide students and families with a little bit of normalcy and joy as they practice reading together,” said Sara Rich, founder and CEO of Just Right Reader.
