For this episode, Tom and Emma chat with David Goodwin and Oliver Caviglioli, co-authors of The Organise Ideas: Thinking By Hand, Extending The Mind, about all things graphic organization. This episode discusses how our memory and organization intertwine to create more comprehensive knowledge and memory in education. Using a wealth of knowledge and Annie Murphy Paul’s The Extended Mind as a primary text, David and Oliver explore “extending the point of access for intellectual thinking” and how deep the roots of mapping things like creativity, comprehension, and knowledge go.
Oliver and David’s new book is a collaborative collection of educators and thinkers in the field. The book explores how educators use visual organizers in practicum. Combining their experience as educators, researchers, and designers, Oliver and David contextualize graphic organization in the sphere of education. According to David, a lifelong educator and education researcher, the project looks at graphic organizers as “tools we pair with other teaching strategies that we weave together to help students in the act of reading and writing and extend their cognition.” The 16-month long project aims to support educators across all levels in the UK and abroad to use organizational tools to unburden students’ memorization skills and unlock extended learning.
