Free Lesson, New Content, and More Available from Discovery Education to Help Teachers and Students Observe Upcoming Eclipse

CHARLOTTE, NC (Thursday, October 5, 2023)Discovery Education today announced it is making available a free lesson, updated content, and more to schools nationwide to support observances of the upcoming October 14th, 2023, Annular Solar Eclipse. Using these resources, educators are empowered to harness this phenomenon to ignite student curiosity in the natural world and more deeply engage students in scientific investigation. Discovery Education is the worldwide edtech leader whose state-of-the-art digital platform supports learning wherever it takes place.

The free lesson available to teachers and students is sourced from Discovery Education’s award-winning Science Techbook. A comprehensive, research-backed science solution for grades K-12, Science Techbook is used in classrooms across the United States, driving student engagement with exclusive, interactive digital content and companion printed resources. With Discovery Education’s free eclipse lesson, educators can lead students to make sense of and explain this natural phenomenon. Discovery Education’s free eclipse lesson is available here.

In addition to the free lesson now available, Discovery Education has added new content focused on eclipses to the Explore Space: NASA’s Missions of Exploration channel within Discovery Education Experience. Experience, Discovery Education’s PreK-12 learning platform, engages students with real-world content and multi-modal instruction, supports teachers with intuitive teaching tools, and ensures high-quality instruction with cross-curricular strategies— delivering a unified classroom experience that prepares learners for tomorrow.

The new, K-12 resources added to Discovery Education Experience’s Explore Space: NASA’s Missions of Exploration channel focus on the science behind an eclipse, what’s special about the October eclipse, how to safely watch eclipses, and where the October eclipse can be viewed. Users of Discovery Education Experience can find those resources here.

Finally, Discovery Education is making available via social media a series of interviews with NASA scientists that explore their career paths, their current work, and answer various questions about the upcoming annular eclipse. Those interviews will be available on Discovery Educations Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook the week of October 9 and will also be added to the Explore Space: NASA’s Missions of Exploration channel within Discovery Education Experience.

Presenting phenomena, like a solar eclipse, within instruction can play a key role in engaging students in core scientific concepts,” said Amy Gensemer, Discovery Education’s Senior Director of Digital Instruction. “Investigating phenomena leads students to building their own understanding of the core ideas in a way that promotes deep learning. With these resources, educators and students have a variety of tools with which to explore the upcoming eclipse.”
