Special Education and IEPs

Special education is how public schools meet their duty to students with disabilities. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), every eligible child is entitled to a free appropriate public education, planned through an Individualized Education Program, the IEP, which sets goals, services and supports. Students who need accommodations but not specialized instruction are often served through a 504 plan instead.

edCircuit's special education coverage is written for the teachers, special education directors, principals and families who make those plans work. It explains how evaluations shape an IEP, what changes in federal special education policy mean for schools, how to support students with dyslexia, autism and ADHD, and where AI and assistive technology are opening new ways to learn. Dyslexia has its own section, Dyslexia.
