As educators, it is our responsibility to not only educate our students academically, but also to support their overall well-being. With the increasing prevalence of mental health issues among young people, it is crucial for schools to create a safe and nurturing environment that promotes mental health awareness and wellness. In this article, we will explore practical strategies and tips for creating a supportive environment in your school, and how it can positively impact the mental health of your students. Let’s dive in and learn how we can make a difference in the lives of our students.

Educate students and staff about mental health

The first step in creating a supportive environment is to educate students and staff about mental health. This includes teaching them about common mental health disorders, how to recognize warning signs, and where to seek help. By increasing awareness and understanding, we can reduce mental health stigma and encourage students to seek support when needed.

Foster a sense of belonging

Feeling connected and supported is essential for mental health. As educators, we can foster a sense of belonging by creating a positive and inclusive school culture. This can include implementing anti-bullying policies, promoting diversity and acceptance, and providing opportunities for students to connect with their peers and teachers. When students feel like they belong, they are more likely to feel safe and supported, which can have a positive impact on their mental health.

Encourage open communication

Creating a supportive environment also means promoting open communication. Students should feel comfortable talking to their teachers and peers about their feelings and concerns. As educators, we can model open communication by being approachable and actively listening to our students. By creating a safe space for students to express themselves, we can help them develop healthy coping mechanisms and build resilience.

Provide resources and support

K12 schools should also provide resources and support for students who may be struggling with their mental health. This can include having a school counselor or mental health professional available for students to talk to, as well as providing information about local mental health resources. By making these resources easily accessible, we can ensure that students have the support they need to maintain their mental well-being.

Incorporate mental health into the curriculum

Another way to promote mental health awareness and wellness is by incorporating it into the curriculum. This can include teaching students about stress management, self-care, and healthy coping strategies. By integrating mental health education into the curriculum, we can help students develop the skills they need to manage their emotions and maintain their mental well-being.

Address the root causes of stress

Stress is a common trigger for mental health issues, and as educators, we can help address the root causes of stress in our students’ lives. This can include reducing academic pressure, providing support for students who may be dealing with difficult home situations, and promoting a healthy work-life balance. By addressing these underlying stressors, we can help prevent mental health issues from arising in the first place.

Partner with parents and the community

Creating a supportive environment for mental health also involves partnering with parents and the community. By working together, we can ensure that students receive consistent support and resources both at home and at school. This can include hosting workshops for parents on how to support their child’s mental health, as well as collaborating with community organizations to provide additional resources and support for students.

Conclusion

In conclusion, creating supportive environments in K12 schools is crucial for promoting mental health awareness and wellness among students. By implementing strategies such as providing access to mental health resources, promoting positive coping skills, and fostering a sense of community, schools can play a vital role in supporting the mental well-being of their students. It is important for educators and school administrators to prioritize mental health and create a safe and inclusive environment for all students. By doing so, we can help students develop the necessary skills to navigate challenges and promote overall wellness. Let us work together to create a supportive and nurturing environment for our students, and in turn, build a healthier and happier generation.

Foundations in Learning, creator of the WordFlight™ literacy intervention solution, is now accepting applications for its Winter 2024 Fluency Innovator Grants. Teachers and administrators who serve students in grades 3 and above and who are passionate about finding and using the best research- and evidence-based literacy solutions are encouraged to apply. Grantees will each receive a free subscription to WordFlight for the upcoming spring semester to help grow students’ foundational reading skills by bridging the gap between phonics and fluency.

All applications are due by January 15, 2025.

“As part of our company’s commitment to equity, we launched the Fluency Innovator Grants last year to make WordFlight available to as many students and educators as possible,” said Allison Zimmermann, CEO of Foundations in Learning, creator of WordFlight. “We’ve seen how access to the program has successfully supported educators with their instruction, as well as yielded dramatic achievement results among students learning to read fluently. Now, we look forward to helping even more students get on the path to reading proficiency.”

WordFlight helps move 80 percent of struggling adolescents to proficient in foundational reading skills in one school year. For example, after receiving a Fluency Innovator Grant in Spring 2024, one dual immersion teacher in California saw the number of students scoring above benchmark on fluency double on the FastBridge assessment after only four months of using the program. Additionally, a majority of students in the class improved their proficiency in automatic word recognition and decoding, as measured by the WordFlight Diagnostic.

Educators looking to achieve measurable results such as this and who are new to using WordFlight—including teachers applying for their individual class or administrators applying for their school building or district—must agree to certain requirements to be considered for the grant. This includes, but is not limited to, educators using the program with students in grades 3-8 whose difficulty with word recognition skills interfere with reading fluency and comprehension.

Applicants must participate in the provided training and professional development in using the program, as well as agree to use WordFlight’s online component 20 minutes per day for four to five days per week throughout the grant period.

All grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Schools and districts that have more than one application will be given highest priority to receive the Fluency Innovator Grant.

Aligned with the science of reading and based in the science of learning, WordFlight is a unique, evidence-based program designed for students in grades 3-8 who have not achieved reading fluency and comprehension because of deficits in their foundational skills. These skills are typically developed by the end of grade 2. WordFlight’s powerful combination of components—screener, patented diagnostic, instructional program, teacher resources, and ongoing implementation support—help students move beyond decoding to learn how to use letter-sound relationships in a way that results in automatic word recognition. WordFlight helps students develop the word-level fluency that is necessary to read fluently for comprehension.

WordFlight leverages adaptive technology and provides personalized, structured and varied practice in an engaging game-like environment that makes learning stick. Throughout the program, students experience varied task difficulty, context changes, and ongoing feedback that help students develop their automatic word recognition skills, the critical precursor to fluency.

How AI is Redefining Writing and Language Skills for Middle Schoolers

Welcome to the digital age, where technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. With the rise of touchscreens and artificial intelligence (AI), the way we communicate and learn has drastically changed. This is especially true for the younger generation, who are growing up in a world where touchscreens and AI are the norm. As middle schoolers navigate this new landscape, it is important for them to develop strong writing and language skills that are relevant to the digital world. In this article, we will explore how AI is redefining writing and language skills for middle schoolers and how they can adapt to this ever-evolving technological landscape.

While there are many benefits to this increased use of technology, there are also concerns about its impact on children’s development, particularly when it comes to writing and language skills. However, with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), we are seeing a shift in the way writing and language skills are being taught and learned by middle schoolers.

The Role of AI in Writing and Language Skills

AI is a branch of computer science that focuses on creating intelligent machines that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. In the context of writing and language skills, AI is being used to assist and enhance the learning process for middle schoolers.

AI-Powered Writing Tools

One of the main ways AI is redefining writing and language skills is through the use of language processing tools. These tools use algorithms to analyze and understand written text, providing feedback and suggestions for improvement. This allows students to receive personalized and immediate feedback on their writing, helping them to improve their skills in real-time.

The Benefits of AI in Writing and Language Skills

The use of AI in writing and language skills has many benefits for middle schoolers. Firstly, it allows for a more personalized learning experience. Each student’s writing is unique, and AI can provide tailored feedback and suggestions based on their individual strengths and weaknesses.

Elevating Writing Quality with AI

Additionally, AI can help to improve the quality of writing. By providing instant feedback and suggestions, students can make corrections and improvements to their writing as they go, rather than waiting for a teacher to grade their work. This can lead to a more polished and refined final product.

Boosting Student Confidence

Furthermore, AI can also help to build confidence in students. Writing can be a daunting task for many middle schoolers, but with the assistance of AI, they can see their progress and feel more confident in their abilities. This can lead to a more positive attitude towards writing and language skills.

The Future of Writing and Language Skills

As AI continues to advance and become more integrated into our daily lives, we can expect to see even more changes in the way writing and language skills are taught and learned. In the future, AI may be able to not only provide feedback and suggestions but also generate original content based on a student’s writing style and preferences.

A Balanced Approach: AI and Human Teachers

However, it is important to note that AI should not replace traditional teaching methods. Teachers still play a crucial role in guiding and nurturing students’ writing and language skills. AI should be seen as a tool to enhance and support the learning process, rather than a replacement for human interaction and instruction.

Conclusion

The touchscreen generation is growing up in a world where technology and AI are constantly evolving and shaping the way we learn and communicate. While there may be concerns about the impact of technology on writing and language skills, AI is proving to be a valuable tool in enhancing and redefining these skills for middle schoolers. As we continue to embrace and utilize AI, we can expect to see even more advancements and improvements in the way we teach and learn writing and language skills.

reDesign, an organization supporting learner-centered education, has created CBE Catalyst, a team-based online professional learning community to accelerate school and district implementation of competency-based systems. Launched at the Aurora Institute Symposium in November, CBE Catalyst is designed to enable educators to turn learning into action with a comprehensive, flexible suite of professional support offerings.

“There is growing agreement, globally, that the focus of education should be on developing uniquely human skills that complement AI and other new technologies. Competency-based learning is a powerful lever in this work. However, systemic shifts to CBE require robust, adaptable, and engaging learning opportunities for educators that are affordable at scale. For years, educators at all levels of the system have shared that they are stymied by the fragmentation and cost of offerings in the CBE professional learning space,” said Antonia Rudenstine, founder and executive director of reDesign. “With 40% of states engaged in developing Graduate Portraits that spotlight the most important competencies young people need, we have an opportunity to accelerate the current momentum by collaborating as CBE learners, designers, and leaders. CBE Catalyst is a low-cost, membership community where educators can prepare to ignite this shift in their own communities–tapping into the hard-won CBE expertise and solutions of colleagues from around the country, while simultaneously contributing to the field’s knowledge base regarding emergent best practices.”

CBE Catalyst is designed to provide school and district teams with maximum flexibility to design a CBE pathway that fits their vision, community, and capacity. All activities are opt-in. An annual membership includes:

  • CBE Ignite Essentials: Join a cohort of school teams for three launch modules facilitated by a reDesign coach. Essentials modules are offered quarterly so teams can determine the timing that works best for them.
  • CBE Tools & Resources: Access an ever-expanding library of CBE tools, self-paced modules, and other resources, delivered to teams every month.
  • Q&A Sessions: Engage with reDesign coaches for just-in-time guidance and support.
  • Community of Practice: Collaborate, troubleshoot, celebrate successes, and crowdsource ideas.
  • Youth Feedback: Create pathways for partnering with young people for feedback and piloting of new CBE designs and policies.

CBE Catalyst learning opportunities begin in February 2025. To learn more about CBE Catalyst, visit www.redesignu.org/cbe-catalyst.

Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of school days in a year, has become a growing concern in the education system. It not only affects the individual student’s academic progress, but also has a significant impact on the overall performance and success of a school. In this instructional piece, we will explore the various factors contributing to chronic absenteeism, its consequences on students and schools, and effective strategies to address this issue. By understanding the gravity of this problem and implementing proactive measures, we can work towards creating a positive and successful learning environment for all students. Let’s delve deeper into this topic and discover how we can combat chronic absenteeism for the betterment of our students and schools.

Academic Performance

One of the most obvious impacts of chronic absenteeism is on a student’s academic performance. When students are frequently absent, they miss out on valuable instruction and classroom discussions. This can lead to gaps in their learning and make it difficult for them to keep up with their peers. As a result, chronically absent students are more likely to fall behind in their studies and have lower grades than their peers who attend school regularly.

Social and Emotional Development

Aside from academic consequences, chronic absenteeism can also have a negative impact on a student’s social and emotional development. Regular school attendance allows students to interact with peers and develop important social skills. When a student is frequently absent, they miss out on these opportunities and may struggle with building relationships and developing social skills. This can lead to feelings of isolation and affect their overall emotional well-being.

Dropout Rates

Chronic absenteeism has been linked to higher dropout rates among students. When a student misses a significant amount of school days, they are more likely to fall behind in their studies and become disengaged from school. This can lead to feelings of frustration and hopelessness, ultimately resulting in dropping out of school. According to a study by Attendance Works, students who are chronically absent in the 9th grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of high school.

Financial Impact on Schools

Aside from the negative impact on students, chronic absenteeism also has financial consequences for schools. When a student is absent, the school loses out on funding from the state. This can have a significant impact on the school’s budget and resources. Additionally, schools may have to spend extra resources on trying to re-engage chronically absent students and provide them with additional support to catch up on missed work.

Addressing Chronic Absenteeism

In order to combat chronic absenteeism, it is important for schools to have a proactive approach. This includes tracking attendance data and identifying students who are at risk of becoming chronically absent. Schools can also work with families to address any underlying issues that may be causing the student to miss school. Additionally, implementing strategies such as positive reinforcement and incentives for good attendance can also help improve attendance rates.

In conclusion, chronic absenteeism has a significant impact on both students and schools. It not only affects a student’s academic performance, but also their social and emotional development. Chronic absenteeism also has financial consequences for schools and can lead to higher dropout rates. It is important for schools to address this issue and work towards improving attendance rates in order to ensure the success and well-being of their students.

Conclusion

In conclusion, chronic absenteeism has a significant impact on both students and schools. It not only affects the academic performance and overall well-being of students, but also creates challenges for schools in terms of funding and resources. As educators and stakeholders, it is crucial to address this issue and implement effective strategies to reduce chronic absenteeism. By promoting a positive school culture, providing support for at-risk students, and collaborating with families and communities, we can work towards improving attendance rates and ultimately, the success of our students and schools. Let us all strive towards creating a culture of attendance and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
