Charlotte, NC (Thursday, October 31, 2024) — The Benjamin School today announced plans to nurture K-5 students’ curiosity and love of science through a suite of dynamic new digital resources. Through the Science Techbook, Benjamin students are encouraged to explore science in fresh ways that ignite their innate interest in the natural world. Developed by global edtech leader Discovery Education, the Science Techbook invites students to experience the marvels of our world via an immersive, phenomena-driven core curriculum that brings the excitement of science to life.

The Benjamin School is one of the nation’s premier independent day schools. Serving over 1,300 PK3-12 students on campuses in Florida’s North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens, The Benjamin School offers a comprehensive academic, athletic, and artistic experience. Through a wide range of courses, class trips, and co-curricular clubs and sports, students learn to work independently and collaboratively as they grow to their full potential. On the Benjamin School’s Lower and Middle School campus, a state-of-the-art STEM Center has the space and resources to allow for exploration and discovery.

The Benjamin School sought a suite of digital resources that would nurture students’ love of science by encouraging K-5 learners to question, investigate, and explain like scientists as they build background knowledge. Specifically, the school sought digital resources that not only engaged students in learning by connecting instruction to the world beyond the classroom, but that were also aligned to applicable science standard and easy to integrate into both existing IT infrastructure and classroom activities. As a PK3-12 school, it was also important that curriculum choices were vertically aligned with the Middle and Upper School curriculums, which culminate in a variety of AP offerings. Benjamin knows that a strong foundation in science helps build curious minds in Lower, Middle, Upper School, and beyond.

After a thorough review of available resources, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook was selected for use in grades K-5.

The Science Techbook is a K-12, standards-aligned, core curriculum that includes engaging digital resources, hands-on activity kits, virtual investigations, and custom professional learning. This comprehensive resource includes ready-to use, phenomena-driven lessons that motivate students, powerful technology tools—such as toggle-on Spanish translation—that personalize access, and time-saving teacher tools that streamline prep and grading.

Science Techbook is available in both print and digital formats, providing a seamless classroom experience, complete with immersive, interactive ways to explore, including hands-on engineering activities, interactive labs, and STEM connections. Through its digital, print, and blended options, Science Techbook delivers a wide range of high-quality resources that support students as they discover how science is practiced in the real world while focusing on deeper understanding and application of grade-appropriate science content.

Recently, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook was certified as meeting the rigorous, evidence-based ESSA Tier III standards set forth in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). In addition, multiple studies show that regular use of Discovery Education Science Techbook in the classroom has many positive academic results for educators and students across a variety of districts and populations in the United States. This research and more can be found here.

Students and teachers at The Benjamin School will use the Science Techbook alongside Mystery Science by Discovery Education, which is already integrated into learning in grades K-5. A unique, standards-aligned science curriculum for grades K-5 designed to help students stay curious, Mystery Science includes engaging, open-and-go lessons with step-by-step, hands-on activities that explore scientific phenomena using common classroom items.

“The Benjamin School takes tremendous pride in supporting our students’ academic growth in all subjects,” said Susan Bickel, Science Coordinator and Science Department Chair at The Benjamin School. “We encourage Benjamin students to think big — really big. From Lower School through Upper School, teachers and coursework push all learners beyond what they imagine into areas of intellectual curiosity and personal discovery. Discovery Education’s science resources support our students’ efforts to explore science in new ways and build a passion for the subject, and we look forward to integrating the Science Techbook quickly into instruction.”

All educators using Discovery Education’s digital resources have access to the Discovery Educator Network. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Educator Network connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable idea sharing and inspiration.

“The Benjamin School has created an exciting new vision for science instruction,” said Discovery Education Senior Manager Jill Crider. “Discovery Education is thrilled to support their efforts, and we look forward to working alongside the school’s talented team as they integrate the Science Techbook into everyday learning.”
