BW Walch Named Preferred Provider of Math Resources in New Mexico

by Nickel Communications October 2, 2025
written by Nickel Communications 2 minutes read

Portland, ME — Oct. 2, 2025 — BW Walch, a leading provider of innovative math solutions, today announced that its instructional materials have been officially adopted by the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) and placed on the state’s 2025 Adopted Multiple List for mathematics. This designation makes BW Walch a preferred provider of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) for schools and districts across New Mexico.

Following a rigorous review process at the 2025 Summer Review Institute, New Mexico educators evaluated more than 130 mathematics titles for alignment to the state’s academic standards, evidence of effectiveness, and cultural and linguistic relevance. BW Walch submitted three titles for consideration, all of which were recommended for adoption with strong scores.

“Being named to New Mexico’s list of approved providers is a tremendous honor and reflects our commitment to providing teachers with the evidence-based resources they need to drive student success in mathematics,” said Sr. Director of Mathematics, Joanne Whitley. “We believe that when teachers are empowered with the right tools, they can close learning gaps and unlock every student’s potential in mathematics.”

The New Mexico adoption process ensures that only instructional materials meeting the state’s highest standards for quality and effectiveness are made available to districts. With BW Walch’s Integrated Pathway Math I, II, and III programs now approved, schools across the state have access to research-based resources designed to strengthen math teaching and learning from middle through high school.

This milestone builds on BW Walch’s reputation as a trusted partner in mathematics education. The company’s solutions, including its OGAP professional learning programs, are designed to support teachers with tools and strategies that foster deep understanding of mathematics and accelerate student achievement.

written by KEH Communications 2 minutes read

Vernier Science Education is now accepting applications for its 2025 Inspiration Grants, designed to support K–12 and college educators in fostering STEM literacy with students. As part of the grant program, a total of 10 educators will each receive $1,000 worth of Vernier technology of their choosing, an annual license for Vernier Graphical Analysis® Pro, and three hours of virtual professional development to further support their teaching.

“Educators across the country are doing extraordinary work day in and day out to engage their students in hands-on STEM learning,” said Jill Hedrick, CEO of Vernier Science Education. “With our Inspiration Grants, we’re excited to provide data-collection technology—and the professional learning to go with it—so educators can amplify their impact and empower students to explore science more deeply.”

The grants are open to all K–12 and college educators who are actively teaching at an educational institution in the United States and who have not previously won a grant from Vernier. As part of the application process, educators must describe how they will implement the $1,000 worth of Vernier technology in their classroom or laboratory, their educational institution’s needs, and how the funding will enhance their instruction and engage students.

Grantees will be selected by a panel of fellow educators and Vernier employees.

All applications are due by November 30, 2025. Grantees will be announced January 6, 2026.

National Education and Advocacy Organizations Oppose FCC Decision to Eliminate Funding for Wi-Fi

by The Fratelli Group September 30, 2025
written by The Fratelli Group 3 minutes read

Washington, D.C. (September 30, 2025) – CoSN, All4Ed, EdTrust, National Education Association, National Center for Learning Disabilities, National Parents Union and Southern Education Foundation today issued the following joint statement in strong opposition to the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) decision to eliminate funding for Wi-Fi hotspots and school bus connectivity through the E-Rate program.

We strongly oppose today’s actions by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), reversing its policies supporting Wi-Fi hotspots and Wi-Fi on school buses through the E-Rate program. These policies help to narrow the “Homework Gap” and ensure learners have the connectivity they need to succeed, regardless of income, geography, or background.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the consequences of inequitable internet access. Nearly 16.9 million children lacked the high-speed home internet needed to engage in learning, with one in three students of color and two in five rural students disproportionately affected. In response, Congress created the $7 billion Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) through the American Rescue Plan Act, and the FCC implemented it quickly and effectively. Applicants requested more than $9.3 billion, and the program supported over 13.5 million connected devices and 8 million broadband connections, reaching approximately 18 million students, or nearly one-third of all U.S. K-12 students. This demonstrates the FCC’s unique capacity to meet urgent home access needs at scale.

Unfortunately, ECF funding has ended, making E-Rate’s funding for Wi-Fi hotspots and Wi-Fi on school buses critical for learners and communities. Rolling back these policies will impose unnecessary costs and confusion on schools, libraries, and families.

Finally, it is deeply unfair for the FCC to advance this reversal without providing educators, families, and communities an opportunity to voice their views. The FCC’s standard practice has been to release draft items weeks in advance, allowing meaningful public comment. Departing from this transparent process on an issue of such importance only compounds the harm.

Reliable internet access is vital for learning in the 21st century. Schools and libraries have stepped up to bridge gaps in access, but they cannot shoulder this burden alone. By maintaining support for Wi-Fi hotspots and Wi-Fi on school buses, the FCC can uphold its mission to ensure universal service and keep millions of students and families connected to opportunity. We respectfully urge you to protect these programs and preserve the progress our nation has made in closing the Homework Gap.

Lexia Programs Deliver Breakthrough Literacy Gains for Pre-K-12 Students, Far Outpacing National Trends

by Nickel Communications September 30, 2025
written by Nickel Communications 4 minutes read

BOSTON (Sept. 29, 2025) – According to the 2024 NAEP report, only 31% of fourth-grade students and 30% of eighth-grade students performed at or above NAEP Proficient, showing the national decline in reading skills is an ongoing challenge for educators. However, by the end of the 2024-25 school year, 83% of pre-K-5 students across the U.S. using Lexia Core5 Reading (Core5) with fidelity were working on skills at or above grade level. Progress reports also showed that 55% of middle and high school students using Lexia PowerUp Literacy (PowerUp) covered three grade levels of reading skills in that same school year.

Developed by Lexia, a Cambium Learning Group brand, Core5 and PowerUp are science of reading-based adaptive blended learning programs that provide students with personalized learning paths. Core5 accelerates the development of literacy skills for pre-K-5 students of all abilities, from at-risk to on-level and advanced. PowerUp is an intervention for non-proficient readers in middle and high schools, helping them improve in three instructional strands (Word Study, Grammar, and Reading Comprehension).

“One of Lexia’s tenets is regularly researching the efficacy of the programs we offer,” said Lexia President Nick Gaehde. “In our latest report, we followed the progress of over 1.3 million students who were using Core5 or PowerUp with fidelity. Once again, the results show that the programs effectively accelerate the learning of students performing below grade level.”

Core5 Findings

  • Pre-K-5 students reading on or above grade level rose from 41% to 83% within the 2024-25 school year.
  • Over half (54%) of students working one grade below their grade level ended the school year working on grade level.
  • More than a third (38%) of students working two or more grades below their own grade level ended the school year working on skills in their grade level or above.
  • Over half (54%) of those students working two or more grades below grade level gained two or more grade levels of skills during the school year.

PowerUp Findings

  • By the end of the 2024-25 school year, a large majority (85%) of students saw their reading skills improve by at least six grade levels.
  • The percentage of students working in K-2 skills dropped below 6% in each strand of material.
  • The percentage of students working on advanced skills in all strands grew from 1% to 41%.

“Lexia goes beyond ‘research-based’ to offer educators ‘research-proven’ support,” said Gaehde. “Year after year, Core5 and PowerUp prove that they empower teachers to have an indisputable effect on students’ reading skills. We look forward to helping many, many more teachers and students in the years to come.”

The findings highlight not only student growth but also the critical role Lexia plays in supporting educators and addressing the urgent literacy needs schools face nationwide.

“We consistently hear from teachers and administrators that one of their greatest challenges is the increasing range of student needs and skill development level in each grade level and classroom,” said Cambium Learning Group CEO Ashley Andersen Zantop. “We are incredibly proud of and committed to the incredible work the Lexia team does. From the research to the proof, Core5 and PowerUp accelerate student literacy outcomes and deliver the real results students and educators need today.”
