Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) Accepting Applications for its Leadership Academies

Superintendent and Principal Academies provide valuable professional development to district leaders; non-ALAS members will receive a 25% discount on their fee to join ALAS

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 28, 2024) – The Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) is accepting applications now through April 15, 2024 for its Superintendents Leadership Academy (SLA) and National Principal Leadership Academy (NPLA).

The academies provide coaching, mentoring, and support to improve and expand opportunities for emerging school system leaders. They include a mix of in-person and virtual sessions that help participants acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to serve in principal or superintendent roles in school systems, with an emphasis on school systems that serve primarily Latino and other historically marginalized students.

Participants in the Academies must be members of ALAS. The association will provide participants with a 25% discount off of the ALAS membership fee.

“Latino children make up more than a quarter of the students in our nation’s schools and it is imperative that we have strong leaders at both the school and district level who understand how to support the needs of Latino and other historically-marginalized youth,” said ALAS Executive Director Dr. Maria Armstrong. “Our academies, which are led by seasoned professionals who have years of experience in the field, provide invaluable opportunities for those seeking targeted, relevant, high-quality leadership development.”

Superintendents Leadership Academy (SLA):

The SLA is led by retired superintendent Dr. Ed Cora and addresses the need to recruit, mentor, and prepare the next generation of superintendents who serve Latino communities, while promoting the advancement of Latino leaders. The year-long leadership academy allows participants to learn current organizational leadership proficiency from superintendents who are known for their success and skilled in their practice.

The SLA includes five virtual sessions and four in-person sessions beginning in September 2024 and ending in May 2025. The registration fee is $2,500 plus lodging and airfare for in-person sessions.

National Principal Leadership Academy (NPLA):

The NPLA is led by retired school district executive director Maria Castilleja and supports the leadership development of aspiring and novice principals, as well as first and second-year principals. The curriculum and assignments are equity-centric for leading staff and serving marginalized and students of color.

The NPLA includes five virtual sessions and one in-person session beginning in July 2024 and ending in April 2025. The registration fee is $1,500 plus lodging and airfare for the in-person session.
