New Lexia Survey Reveals COVID-Era Kindergarteners Enter School With Weaker Literacy, Attention, and Social-Emotional Skills

by Nickel Communications December 16, 2025
written by Nickel Communications 3 minutes read

BOSTON — Dec. 16, 2025 — Lexia, a Cambium Learning Group, today released findings from a national survey revealing that the first full cohort of children born during the COVID-19 pandemic entered kindergarten with markedly weaker school-readiness skills. The new data shows widespread declines in foundational literacy, attention, and social-emotional development—trends educators say represent one of the most significant early-learning challenges they have faced in years.

The survey, deployed in October 2025 through Lexia’s Voice of the User platform and an opt-in educator research panel, gathered responses from more than 200 kindergarten teachers using Lexia Core5 Reading or Lexia English Language Development.

Educators’ responses point to several notable patterns in early learning readiness.

Foundational Literacy Skills Are Lagging

  • 73% of teachers say kindergarteners are behind in early literacy.
  • Biggest gaps: letter sounds, letter recognition, writing letters/names, vocabulary.

Social-Emotional Readiness Is Lower

  • 82% say students are less socially-emotionally ready, especially with sharing, collaboration, and emotion regulation.

 Attention Spans Are Shorter

  • 89% report shorter attention spans during reading; two-thirds say much

Confidence Has Declined

  • More than half say students are less confident participating in reading activities.

Educators also identified the supports they believe would most strengthen early literacy foundations for today’s kindergarteners, emphasizing the need for greater family engagement in reading, more vocabulary and oral language development, explicit phonics practice, and increased small-group or one-on-one instructional time. They also highlighted the program features they find most helpful in meeting these needs, pointing to personalized instruction, clear progress-monitoring tools, and engaging content that keeps young learners motivated.

“These findings confirm what many educators are feeling in their classrooms: today’s kindergarteners are entering school with dramatically different needs than cohorts before the pandemic,” said Nick Gaehde, president of Lexia. “As students face gaps in foundational literacy, attention, and social-emotional skills, teachers need solutions that provide structure, personalization, and ongoing visibility into progress. For example, last year, in a large suburban district, as more than 6,700 kindergarteners progressed in Lexia, they scored higher on their language and literacy screenings—a result that underscores our commitment to providing research-aligned tools educators can trust.”

Newly Released AI Detector, Pangram 3.0, Gives Greater Transparency and Detailed Insight Into Text Written or Modified By AI

by Pando Public Relations December 12, 2025
written by Pando Public Relations 2 minutes read

Pangram, already established as the most accurate and most reliable AI transparency and discovery technology, today launched a significant new upgrade to its detection software – Pangram 3.0. Pangram can now reliably and accurately identify text that has been edited or modified by AI systems, in addition to surfacing text that was entirely created by AI.

The upgraded system includes several advances to Pangram’s already best-in-class AI detection technology. Pangram 3.0 gives enhanced transparency into written work including how any selection of a written text was created, assembled, or modified with AI. In education, that means that a teacher or college professor will have the specific information they need when evaluating a paper, rather than relying on the limited information of an aggregated percentage of AI present.

“Pangram is the first AI detector to give insight into the subtleties that go into writing. In many sectors, especially in education, AI text detection was limited to a binary response: is there AI content or not?” said Max Spero, cofounder and CEO of Pangram. “Pangram 3.0 is the first detector that can show where a text was AI-generated, where it was fully human-written, and that in-between space where a text was co-authored with AI,” he said.

To build the new version of Pangram, the company trained its model on hundreds of editing prompts such as, “Make this more descriptive” or “Make this more casual.” With Pangram 3.0, sections of text may be labeled as lightly AI-assisted or moderately AI-assisted, which make it easier to make policy decisions based on AI usage.

“Previous versions of Pangram were highly accurate at differentiating between human and AI, but could not tell you the extent to which AI assisted with a particular section,” Spero said. “Now we can go deeper and paint a real picture of what’s going on. It’s a significant step forward for our system and for the field of AI transparency,” he said.

Read more about Pangram 3.0 here.

About Pangram

Pangram Labs is the technology leader in AI detection systems, surpassing other detection providers in accuracy, reliability, and information delivery. Pangram’s detection systems are relied on by thousands of businesses, primarily for assessing and addressing public reviews of products and services, many of which are compromised by AI. Founded by classmates at Stanford University, Pangram is gaining market traction in education as the high-accuracy alternative for assessing the authenticity of student work.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA | Dec. 2, 2025 – District leaders are under growing pressure to create communication experiences that feel simple, consistent, and connected across every school.

Even with more tools than ever, families still say communication feels scattered, inconsistent, and impersonal—not because districts aren’t trying, but because most platforms weren’t built to connect each message back to their child.

Families want one place to follow what’s happening at school, in classrooms, and in their child’s day—without juggling apps or missing critical updates. Teachers need tools that lighten their workload, not add steps or complexity. And district leaders need visibility and alignment across every school without forcing families or staff into yet another platform they don’t love.

That’s why ClassDojo for Districts spent the past year working directly with district leaders to solve one of the hardest problems in K–12 communication: creating a unified districtwide experience on a platform families already trust, use daily, and genuinely enjoy.

In this Learn with Leaders session, Pacchiana and Stevens will share:
• The real-world needs these new features were built to address
• How district partners helped guide every decision
• What’s launching in 2026 to simplify communication across every school
• How to support teachers while creating a more consistent experience for families

This session is ideal for superintendents, communications teams, family engagement leaders, school leaders, and district technology teams.

There’s no cost to attend, but registration is required.
