Educators Tackle the High School Crisis at ASCD 2025: New Panel Explores Bold, Inclusive Solutions

by Zer0 to 5ive June 25, 2025
written by Zer0 to 5ive 2 minutes read

Sacramento, CA—June 24, 2025—SchoolStatus, the leading provider of attendance and family engagement solutions for K-12 districts, is joining a powerhouse panel of education leaders at ASCD and ISTELive in San Antonio this July. “High School Overhaul: Educators Leading Real Change” brings together five diverse changemakers who are breaking old models and building inclusive, data-informed systems that support every student—and every educator.

Across the country, high schools are continuing to battle chronic absenteeism. Students report feeling disconnected and unseen. And educators are often working in outdated systems that weren’t designed for today’s learners.

To tackle these challenges head-on, the panel will discuss five key shifts needed to make high school a place students want to be.

  • Redesigning high school systems and schedules
  • Centering equity, well-being, and student voice
  • Using disaggregated data to scale success
  • Empowering teacher leadership and retention
  • Building true family partnerships to combat absenteeism

Each topic includes real-world examples, a strategic question to deepen the discussion, and time for audience reflection.

“This isn’t a conversation about fixing kids,” says Dr. Josephine Salvador, Director of the New York State Master Teacher Program. “It’s about reimagining schools so that students feel safe, known, and inspired to learn—and teachers have the support and trust to lead the way.”

Meet the Panelists

  • Marcus Bratton, Sr. Director, Implementation & Partnership, Colorado Education Initiative
  • Dr. Terry Harris, Executive Director, The Legacy Center STL
  • Dr. Josephine Salvador, Director, NY State Master Teacher Fellowship
  • Dr. Jonah Schenker, Superintendent & Chief Executive Officer, Ulster BOCES District
  • Moderator: Dr. Kara Stern, Director of Education, SchoolStatus

Panelists will share actionable strategies—and challenge attendees to rethink the “why” behind the systems we’ve inherited.

“This conversation reflects our mission at SchoolStatus—to turn insights into outcomes,” said Dr. Kara Stern, Director of Education at SchoolStatus. “By integrating communication tools with student data, we break down barriers and help educators create meaningful school-home connections that improve attendance, behavior, and academic performance.”

If you’re not able to attend in person, download SchoolStatus’s free attendance and family engagement resources or get in touch to discuss how this integrated suite of solutions can help you meet district goals.

Students Using Lexia Core5 Reading Outperformed Their Peers On the Smarter Balanced English Language Arts/Literacy Assessment

by Nickel Communications June 24, 2025
written by Nickel Communications 3 minutes read

BOSTON (June 23, 2025) – In California, third- to fifth-grade students at 525 schools using Lexia Core5 Reading (Core5) from Lexia, a Cambium Learning Group brand, made significantly higher literacy gains compared to their peers in 4,362 schools that did not use the program. The schools were highlighted in a recently released report which compared the students’ performance on the Smarter Balanced English Language Arts/Literacy (SBAC ELA) assessment.

Core5 accelerates the foundational and advanced literacy skills for all students—from at-risk to on-level and advanced—in elementary grades. The research-proven program provides students with a systematic and structured approach to phonological awareness, oral language, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

“This study is the first to investigate the impact of Core5 at scale in California schools,” said Lexia President Nick Gaehde. “Our study evaluated Core5’s impact on more than one million California elementary students’ ELA achievement during the 2022-23 school year. We started with third graders because they are the youngest students assessed on the Smarter Balanced assessment.”

The Core5 and non-Core5 schools in the study had similar average scores on the 2022 SBAC ELA. However, on the 2023 assessment, third graders at the Core5 schools scored an average of 3.49 points higher than their peers at the non-Core5 schools. The scores for Core5-using fourth and fifth graders were, on average, 2.81 and 3.35 points higher respectively than their non-using peers.

The Core5 schools had more Emergent Bilingual students as well as more Hispanic or Latino students than non-Core5 schools. However, both categories of schools were similar in total enrollment and the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

“Interestingly, third and fourth grade students at the schools using Core5 also scored statistically higher—3.08 points and 3.04 points higher, respectively—on the SBAC Math assessment than students at non-Core5 schools,” said Gaehde. “That fact drives home the point that improving students’ literacy outcomes boosts their achievements in other areas. Since post-pandemic federal relief funds expired in 2024, school leaders have had to decide whether they should continue investing in interventional programs. These results show that Core5 is helping California educators address the critical need to improve student reading proficiency.”

South Dakota School System Expands Partnership with EdTech Leader to Enhance Science and Social Studies Instruction

by Discovery Education June 18, 2025
written by Discovery Education 5 minutes read

Charlotte, NC (Wednesday, June 18, 2025)—South Dakota’s Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) today announced an expansion of its partnership with Discovery Education, the creators of essential PreK-12 learning solutions used in classrooms around the world. In this latest phase of collaboration, the district will receive new digital resources enhancing science instruction in grades 6-8 and social studies instruction in grades 9-12.

RCAS serves more than 12,000 students and employs more than 1,600 employees across western South Dakota. RCAS’s dedicated staff is committed to thoughtful planning, ongoing improvement, and academic excellence so that the students they serve graduate with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed.

In preparation for the 2025-2026 school year, RCAS undertook a comprehensive review of existing science and social studies instructional resources. Following this review, the district identified a need for new science materials aligned with the South Dakota Department of Education Science Standards for grades 6-8. In addition, the district review found that new world geography materials aligned to updated South Dakota state standards were also required for grades 9-12. Following a thorough review of available resources, RCAS selected:

  • Discovery Education Experience. The essential companion for engaged classrooms, Discovery Education Experience is a supplemental cross-curricular digital resource that inspires teachers, motivates students, and supports instruction in science, social studies, and all other academic disciplines. Designed expressly for K-12 schools, Experience delivers all-in-one, ready-to-teach lessons and strategies, exciting career exploration resources, standards-aligned content, and flexible tools for differentiation and assessment. The Science Techbooks that will be used in RCAS classrooms are aligned to South Dakota state standards, and feature virtual and hands-on investigations, STEM activities, and instructional supports that enhance the delivery of impactful, blended instruction. The Science Techbooks also include standards connections and differentiation activities that inform instructional planning and guide three-dimensional learning. Available with the Science Techbooks are coordinated teacher guides offering unit, concept, and lesson overviews, accompanying print resources, and pre-packaged kits that make classroom activities easy to implement.

Discovery Education’s Science Techbook is certified as meeting the rigorous, evidence-based ESSA Tier III standards as set forth in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Multiple studies show that regular use of Discovery Education Science Techbook in the classroom has many positive academic results for educators and students across a variety of districts and populations in the United States. This research and more can be found here.

  • Social Studies Techbook. Featuring standards-aligned, core-curricular resources that use an inquiry-based approach to enhance literacy and critical thinking skills, Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook aids teachers and students as they approach inquiry through the 5Es Framework: Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, and Evaluate. From stories of ancient cultures to in-depth explorations of civics and government, this comprehensive digital textbook takes concepts off the pages and brings lessons to life. The Social Studies Techbook is available for several courses including World History, U.S. History, Civics and Government, and World Geography and Cultures, which is the course adopted by

The new Discovery Education digital resources selected for use by RCAS staff will be used alongside the company’s Mystery Science, DreamBox Reading Plus, and DreamBox Math resources, all of which are already in use in district classrooms.

“RCAS seeks to create a rigorous, collaborative, and inclusive learning environment for all students, so each individual is empowered to pursue a lifetime of personal success,” said Nicole Keegan, Rapid City Area Schools’ Staff Development Manager. “The addition of these powerful new resources to our science and social studies curricula supports that effort. These high-quality, easy-to-use resources are aligned to South Dakota’s educational standards and fit easily into our existing educational technology plan. We look forward to integrating these new instructional materials into our classroom activities.”

RCAS educators using Discovery Education solutions will receive dedicated professional development  from Discovery Education’s team of professional learning experts. These learning opportunities for teachers help schools recognize the full return on their edtech investment. Through Discovery Education’s interactive professional development sessions, participants will learn best practices for integrating their new digital resources into instruction. Effective professional learning increases student engagement and supports the continued academic development of all students.

In addition, all educators using Discovery Education’s digital resources have access to the Discovery Educator Network. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Educator Network connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is thrilled to deepen its partnership with the Rapid City Area Schools,” said Ray Malouf, Discovery Education Account Executive. “We look forward to continuing to support the school system’s talented team as they create innovative and engaging lessons in science, social studies, and all other disciplines.”

Validated Insights Report on Computer Science and Information Technology Released: Tech Degrees Growing, Some Significantly

by Pando Public Relations June 17, 2025
written by Pando Public Relations 4 minutes read

CHICAGO – June 17, 2025 – According to a newly released report (this link no longer available) from higher education marketing and research firm Validated Insights, computer science and information technology (CS/IT) related degree programs have experienced strong growth recently, with some sub-fields growing rapidly. At the same time, there are caution signals in some places.

According to the report, the number of certificates and degrees in CS/IT awarded by colleges and universities tripled from 2011 to 2023. Over the past five years enrollment in these programs has grown at a 7.2% annually, to more than 1.3 million students. Online CS/IT enrollment outpaced overall growth in these fields, posting a 10.4% yearly growth rate over the past five years, the report found.

“Computer science and IT-related fields of study continue to be areas of growth nearly across the board,” said Brady Colby, Head of Market Research at Validated Insights and founder of Thirty Two Edu, which was acquired by Validated Insights in 2023. “Strong enrollments in these areas also follow through to increasing completion numbers and consistent interest from the key demographic of adult learners,” he said.

In specific CS/IT-related areas of study, the new report found consistent growth in enrollments. This included a very high growth rate in one area specifically – data analytics & data science, which grew a remarkable 195% per year in the past four years.

Examples of these specific areas of study include:

  • From Fall 2018 to Fall 2023, enrollment in AI/ML programs across all award levels grew at a 44.8% per year.
  • From 2019 to 2024, enrollment in BS in computer science programs grew at 4.9% annually, and MS in computer science programs grew at a 10.1%.
  • From Fall 2018 to Fall 2024, total enrollment in BS in cybersecurity programs grew at a 22.5% per year, and MS in cybersecurity enrollment grew at a 6.2%.
  • From Fall 2020 to Fall 2024, enrollment in BS in data analytics & data science programs grew at 179.2% annually, and enrollment in MS in data analytics & data science programs grew at a 200.5% per year.

The strong growth in these study fields is echoed by confidence among school leaders, especially in the area of online programs. The report found that over the past five years the percentage of university leaders saying they believed that online CS/IT programs are “poised for strong growth” doubled, growing from 13% to 26%.

Another interesting finding from the report is that, “Taking a Computer Science course in high school increases the likelihood that a student will declare Computer Science as their major in the future by 10%.” This may indicate that expanding future study in CS and IT fields may aid future enrollment interest.

“The pipeline is good, the confidence is high,” said Colby. “And in fields such as data analysis and artificial intelligence, we see very, very strong market signals in the enrollment numbers and in the labor market,” he said.

Still, the report found areas in the CS and IT market that may be cause for mild concern. For example, according to the report, “While BS in Computer Science completions grew at a 9.7% a year from 2018 to 2023, the year-over-year growth declined from 14.6% in 2019 to just 4.3% in 2023.” Potentially more troubling is that, according to the report, “Entry-level tech hiring declined 25% year-over-year in 2024 in spite of the broader market recovery.”

“Entry-level jobs in these CS areas are no longer a universal given,” Colby said. “That reality may lead people to ultimately decide to continue their studies at the graduate level, or it may lead to shifts in student preferences, but we have yet to see the impact of this borne out in the higher education space,” he said.

Like previous reports from Validated Insights, the new CS/IT education and market report explored dynamics such as career demands, job postings, and completion rates.

This report is the first from Validated Insights to examine the computer science education marketplace. Previous reports have studied the market for online program management companies (OPM), MBA programs, nursing education, and trade schools.

Also like its other benchmark education market reports, the report on CS/IT fields will be updated regularly, along with other timely and relevant information about higher education and the higher education market generally. Ativion® and NASEF Partner to Expand Safe, Accessible Esports in K–12 Schools

by Pando Public Relations June 17, 2025
written by Pando Public Relations 3 minutes read

NEW YORK – Ativion® and the Network of Academic and Scholastic Esports Federations (NASEF) have signed a partnership agreement to explore programs that will promote esports while making it easier for K-12 schools to safely access games and online resources. Through this collaboration, Ativion will work closely with NASEF’s experts on several technical initiatives for StudentKeeper, powered by ContentKeeper, an all-in-one platform for content filtering, classroom management, and digital safety. The partnership aims to give schools easier, safer access to the games and communities that are important to academic esports leagues and clubs. Ativion and NASEF will also participate in joint scholastic esports promotion and training programs.

NASEF is the leading global scholastic esports organization. NASEF supports leaders and youth to build career and professional skills through a unique blend of play and learning. Its frameworks for developing scholastic esports classes, clubs, and teams are used by tens of thousands of educators seeking to leverage the draw of gameplay for student impact.

“We are pleased to join with NASEF to make it easier and safer for schools and leagues to offer scholastic esports programs,” said Tobias Hartmann, CEO of Ativion. “Scholastic esports is an all-inclusive sports program available to every student, and it offers many benefits, academically and socially. We look forward to working closely with NASEF to make StudentKeeper a conduit for schools to grow their scholastic esports programs.”

“School leaders and educators are eager to adopt scholastic esports because of its proven positive impacts on student attendance, grades, test scores, and morale. Of course, it is important that they can access key gaming and information sites without compromising the security of the network. NASEF and Ativion are working together to make that safe access a simpler process,” said Claire LaBeaux, Chief Advancement Officer for NASEF.
