School Models

Most American schools still follow a model set a century ago: students grouped by age, moving through subjects on a fixed schedule in separate classrooms. A school model is the overall design of how a school is organized, from how students are grouped and scheduled to how teachers work together and how learning is measured.

edCircuit's coverage looks at schools that do it differently and at the ideas behind them. It asks whether we can design the perfect school, looks at student-centered and competency-based models, the bridge between early childhood and elementary school, and the debate over saving public education. It is written for school leaders and planners. For charter, magnet and private options, see School Choice; for buildings and learning spaces, School Design and Facilities.
