A blended school in practice: Poudre School District Global Academy
In February 2018, Cheryl Fenlason described in edCircuit how Poudre School District Global Academy (PGA) in Colorado moved from a fully virtual school to a blended one. PGA opened in 2009 as a virtual school for students who struggled in a traditional setting, starting with 22 students. In 2014, Cheryl Fenlason wrote, the school moved to a blended model in which students spend three days a week on online courses at home and two days a week at school with their teachers and classmates. Cheryl Fenlason reported that about 60 percent of instruction for kindergarten through grade 8 and 80 percent for high school was online.
On the online days, parents act as learning coaches who access assignments, communicate with teachers and sign off on completed work. To prepare them, PGA offered a Jump Start Week, a half-day onsite orientation, mentoring from experienced learning coach families and an optional monthly learning coach academy for kindergarten through grade 8. On campus, teachers could group students by need, let students who were ahead work on projects, and work with others in small groups or one to one. Students could also work on online courses at school and receive face-to-face mentoring.
Cheryl Fenlason said PGA built the model around six relationships: teacher to teacher, teacher to parent, teacher to student, parent to parent, parent to student and student to student. As of the 2016–2017 school year, Cheryl Fenlason reported record enrollment of 194 students, the facility’s maximum capacity, and standardized test scores above the state average. The school also won two Colorado awards for achievement and academic growth in 2015–2016. These figures are from 2018 and describe the school at that time.
